The number of foreigners entering China visa-free via the China-Laos railway increased by 48% year-on-year in 2025
According to the Mohan Exit-Entry Frontier Inspection Station in Yunnan Province, the China-Laos Railway inspected over 290,000 person-times of entry-exit personnel from 110 countries and regions worldwide in 2025. Among the entry-exit personnel, there were over 50,000 person-times of foreign nationals, with a year-on-year increase of over 34%. Among them, over 13,400 person-times of foreign nationals entered visa-free, with a year-on-year increase of 48%.
According to the Mohan Exit-Entry Frontier Inspection Station, since the China-Laos Railway international passenger train service commenced operations on April 13, 2023, as of December 31, 2025, over 2,800 cross-border international passenger trains have been inspected, and more than 710,000 entry-exit personnel from 123 countries and regions have been cleared. Over 55,000 foreign nationals have been cleared, including over 24,000 foreign nationals who entered visa-free. Laotian, Thai, and Malaysian passengers rank the top three in terms of number, with the primary reasons for entry being sightseeing, business meetings, and visiting friends and relatives.

To facilitate cross-border travel for tourists, the Mohan Exit-Entry Frontier Inspection Station has continuously innovated its service models, optimized police force allocation and customs clearance procedures, and introduced more than 10 convenience and benefit measures for customs clearance, such as online appointment for inbound tour groups, 24-hour barrier-free customs clearance, opening of dedicated "the Belt and Road" channels and visa-free channels, setting up on-site "mobile consultation stations", and promoting online submission of foreigner entry cards.
